Washington Leadership Program

Live, work, and learn in D.C.

SPEA’s Washington Leadership Program (WLP) will give you the opportunity to network with professionals leading the way in the nation’s capital—all while gaining valuable career experience and class credit. In the program, you'll develop the professional skills needed to become a leader and make a difference.

The semester-long program is offered in both the fall and spring. Junior and senior undergraduate students from all majors at all IU campuses are eligible to attend.

About 20 students from a variety of IU majors and programs participate in WLP in the spring and fall semester. Applications for the spring 2018 cohort are currently being accepted and are due Sunday, October 1, 2017. To apply, submit a cover letter, résumé, and a letter of reference.

Study the U.S. policy process

During the semester-long program, you’ll take two 3-credit courses designed to give you an insider’s view of D.C. You’ll also take field trips and create opportunities by networking with distinguished speakers and leaders paving the way in the nation’s capital.

Living in Washington, D.C.

You’ll stay in the Washington Intern Housing Network, just a 12-minute walk to the U.S. Senate, a 21-minute walk to the U.S. House, and an 8-minute walk to Union Station.

You will live in a fully furnished apartment that sleeps six and contains two baths, a full kitchen, and laundry. Your building includes a 24-hour security desk with security cameras, a rooftop pool, exercise facility, theater room, recreation room, and an in-house dry cleaning service.
